How to Choose Hi-Vis Workwear: A Complete Buying Guide
Choosing hi-vis workwear sounds straightforward. You pick something bright, put it on, and people see you. But anyone who has bought hi-vis for a team knows it is not that simple. There are different classes, fabric types, tape layouts, and standards to consider. Get it wrong and your team could be under-protected. Get it right and they are visible, comfortable, and compliant with the law.
This guide covers everything you need to know. We will explain EN ISO 20471 classes, the different fabrics hi-vis comes in, how tape layout affects visibility, and which type suits which job. By the end, you will know exactly what to look for.
EN ISO 20471: The standard that matters
Hi-vis workwear sold in the UK must meet EN ISO 20471. This is the standard that sets minimum requirements for high visibility clothing. It covers the amount of fluorescent background material, the retroreflective tape, and how the garment is designed. Do not buy hi-vis without this mark on the label. Anything labelled EN 471 is the old standard. It was replaced by EN ISO 20471 in 2013, so anything still carrying only EN 471 should be replaced.
The standard has three classes. Class 1 gives the lowest visibility, Class 3 the highest. The class is determined by how much fluorescent material and retroreflective tape the garment has. A Class 3 jacket has more hi-vis area than a Class 1 vest. Simple as that. But higher class does not always mean better. We will get to why.
Class 1, 2 and 3: What is the difference?
Class 3 garments have the most hi-vis material. Minimum 0.80 square metres of fluorescent fabric and 0.20 square metres of retroreflective tape. You see these on motorways and dual carriageways. Think high-speed environments where workers need to be spotted from a long distance. Road workers, traffic officers, breakdown crews. Class 3 is usually a jacket or a full-sleeve bib and brace.
Class 2 has 0.50 square metres of fluorescent fabric and 0.13 square metres of tape. This covers most construction sites, railway work, warehouse operations, and delivery drivers. It is the most common class in UK workwear. Class 2 is plenty for environments where vehicles move at lower speeds or where lighting conditions are reasonable. A Class 2 hi-vis vest over a standard jacket is a common setup.
Class 1 has 0.14 square metres of fluorescent and 0.10 square metres of tape. This covers parking attendants, airport ground crew away from active runways, or low-risk environments. Most buyers skip Class 1 for professional use. If you are buying for a construction site or a warehouse, go Class 2 as a minimum.
Fabric types: What is the right material?
Hi-vis comes in three main fabric types. The choice depends on the working environment, not the visibility class.
Polyester fabric (standard)
This is your standard hi-vis. Breathable, lightweight polyester. Good for general use where weather is mild. It is the cheapest option and works fine for indoor and fair-weather outdoor work. Most hi-vis vests and polo shirts are polyester.
Breathable waterproof hi-vis
For outdoor work in the UK, waterproof hi-vis is a must-have. Look for a taped-seam jacket with a breathable membrane. EN 343 certifies the waterproof and breathable performance. Class 3/1 (water column 8,000mm+ and breathability) is the sweet spot for all-day wear. You do not want a jacket that keeps rain out but leaves the wearer soaked in sweat.
Hi-vis for high heat or flame risk
If your team works near heat, flame, or electrical arc flash, you need FR hi-vis. These combine the EN ISO 20471 visibility requirements with EN ISO 11612 heat and flame protection or EN 61482-2 arc flash protection. They cost more but they are essential for utilities, foundries, welding, and electrical work. You cannot wear standard polyester hi-vis near flame. It melts onto the skin.
Tape layout: Why it matters more than you think
The retroreflective tape is what makes hi-vis work at night. When vehicle headlights hit the tape, it bounces light back to the driver. The tape layout affects visibility from different angles. A standard Class 2 or 3 jacket has two horizontal bands around the body and one over each shoulder. That gives 360 degree visibility.
Some jobs need different layouts. If workers spend all day sitting in a vehicle, horizontal bands can bunch up and hide behind the seat belt. For these roles, look for a layout with vertical chest strips or a waistcoat-style design that keeps the tape visible while seated.
Also check the tape width. EN ISO 20471 requires minimum 50mm wide tape. Some budget garments use narrower tape that does not meet the standard. The label should show the tape width in the certification.
Hi-vis by job role
Different jobs need different hi-vis. Here is a rough guide:
Construction: Class 2 or 3, waterproof or breathable jacket for outdoor sites, vest or polo for indoor finishing work. Go for contrasting tape colours (yellow on orange, orange on yellow) to maximise visibility in all conditions. Browse our hi-vis workwear range for construction-ready options.
Road and motorway work: Class 3 jacket with 360 degree tape coverage. Must be waterproof if outdoors. Add a Class 2 or 3 bib and brace in wet conditions so the tape stays visible even when bending.
Warehouse and logistics: Class 2 vest over standard workwear. For chilled environments, look for a padded hi-vis jacket with EN 342 cold protection. For forklift areas, make sure the garment fits close to the body so nothing can catch on controls or racking.
Delivery drivers: Class 2 or 3 waistcoat that stays visible while seated. Look for a garment with vertical tape or a wrap-around design that does not bunch up behind the seat belt.
Railway work: Class 3 with orange fluorescent fabric (not yellow). Network Rail specifies orange hi-vis for trackside workers. Yellow is for road and construction. Check the specific client or site rules before buying.
What else to check on the label
Beyond the class, check the care label. Hi-vis performance degrades with the wrong washing. No fabric softener. No bleach. The reflective tape starts to peel if washed above 40 degrees or tumbled dried on high heat. Replace any garment where the tape is cracking, peeling, or losing reflectivity. And replace when the fluorescent fabric fades. Faded hi-vis does not meet the standard anymore, even if the garment is structurally fine.
Also check the garment has the correct pictogram on the label. EN ISO 20471 has a specific symbol. If the label shows a different standard or no standard at all, do not buy it. Some fashion hi-vis garments look the part but do not meet any safety standard. They are not PPE.
