EN ISO 11612 Heat and Flame Protective Clothing Standards Explained
If your team works near heat or flame, the workwear they wear needs to meet EN ISO 11612. This is the main standard for industrial protective clothing against heat and flame. It covers everything from foundry coveralls to welding jackets to boiler suits in power plants. But what does the standard actually test? And how do you read that string of letters and numbers on the label?
This guide breaks down EN ISO 11612 in plain English. We'll explain each performance level, from A to F, and help you pick the right protection for your risk assessment.
What is EN ISO 11612?
EN ISO 11612 is the standard for protective clothing that shields the wearer from heat and flame. It replaced the older EN 531 back in 2008, and the current version (2015) is recognised across the UK and Europe.
The standard sets minimum performance requirements for fabric and garment construction. It covers several types of heat exposure. Not just direct flame contact, but also radiant heat, convective heat, contact heat, and molten metal splash. If a garment is certified to EN ISO 11612, it has been tested against the hazards the manufacturer claims it covers.
It's not a simple pass or fail. The standard uses a letter and number code. You'll see something like A1 B1 C1 on a welding jacket or A2 B2 C2 E2 on a foundry coverall. Each letter and number tells you exactly what level of protection the garment provides for a specific hazard.
Breaking down the rating code
The standard tests six categories. Each gets a letter code from A to F.
A: Limited flame spread (A1 or A2)
This is the baseline test. Every garment carrying the EN ISO 11612 mark must pass A1 or A2. The fabric is held over a flame for a set time. When the flame is removed, the material must not keep burning beyond a certain point. A2 is more stringent than A1, but for most industrial work A1 does the job. No pass here, no EN ISO 11612 certification at all.
B: Convective heat (B1 through B6)
Convective heat is heat transferred through a flame or hot gas. Think of standing near a furnace door when it opens. The B rating measures how well the fabric insulates against that. B1 is the lowest level, B6 is the highest. For welding and light hot work, B1 or B2 is fine. For foundry work or furnace operation, you want B3 or above.
C: Radiant heat (C1 through C4)
Radiant heat transfers through electromagnetic waves. The heat you feel from a hot surface without touching it. The C rating measures how long the fabric can block that before the inside temperature climbs too far. C1 gives you around 7 seconds of protection. C4 gives 100 seconds or more. If workers are near furnaces or molten metal, radiant heat protection is essential.
D and E: Molten metal splash
Two separate tests here. D is for molten aluminium splash, rated D1 through D3. E is for molten iron splash, rated E1 through E3. These matter for foundry work, welding, and metal fabrication. The tests measure how much metal the fabric can shed without letting it through to the skin or catching fire. D and E are not interchangeable. Aluminium and iron behave differently. A garment rated for one may not protect against the other.
F: Contact heat (F1 through F3)
Contact heat covers situations where you press against a hot surface. Kneeling on a hot floor, leaning against hot machinery, handling hot objects. The F rating measures how long the fabric insulates at a given temperature. F1 is the lowest, F3 the highest.
How to read an EN ISO 11612 label
A typical label might read: EN ISO 11612 A1 B1 C1 E2. That tells you the garment passes the flame spread test (A1), provides basic convective heat protection (B1), basic radiant heat protection (C1), and iron splash protection level 2 (E2). It does NOT claim to protect against aluminium splash (no D rating) or contact heat (no F rating).
Match the ratings to your actual hazards. If your risk assessment identifies aluminium splash, you need a D rating. If the main risk is standing near a furnace, go for higher B and C ratings. The label tells you exactly what the garment can handle.
EN ISO 11612 vs other heat and flame standards
EN ISO 11612 is the most common standard for industrial FR workwear, but it's not the only one. EN 61482-2 covers arc flash protection for electrical workers. It tests against a different energy profile (explosive arc blast). Some fabrics carry both certifications, which is ideal for anyone doing hot work and electrical work.
EN ISO 11611 covers welding protection specifically. It's narrower than EN ISO 11612, focusing on welding spatter, radiant heat from the arc, and flame spread. Many welding jackets carry both standards. The key difference is that EN ISO 11611 also tests for welding spatter adhesion and electrical conductivity, since welders may be in contact with live circuits.
EN 469 is for firefighters. It's much tougher than EN ISO 11612, with higher heat, water penetration, and mechanical requirements. You don't need it for industrial hot work, and EN ISO 11612 isn't suitable for structural firefighting. They serve different purposes.
What to check before you buy
Match the ratings to your actual risks. Don't pay for C4 radiant protection if your team never works near hot surfaces. Don't skip D or E ratings if molten metal is present. Your risk assessment should drive the specification, not the other way around.
Check the fabric type. Inherent FR fabrics build the protection into the fibre itself. They last the life of the garment and need less fuss with washing. Treated FR fabrics start as cotton that's chemically processed. They cost less but the protection can degrade with poor washing or the wrong detergent. For daily use in high heat, inherent FR pays off in the long run.
Think about the full outfit. EN ISO 11612 applies to individual garments, but if you wear FR trousers with a non-FR t-shirt, that t-shirt can catch fire and defeat everything. Every layer should be FR or natural fibre (cotton or wool). No synthetics next to the skin.
